Independent specialist guides are one of Africa’s greatest draw cards and without doubt, its greatest ambassadors! Their congenial company, seemingly infinite knowledge, stories and laughter around the campfire is an intoxicating mix. It’s surprising how many superb safari guides there are, given the range of attributes they must possess. A natural rapport with people and an easy temperament is essential. Detailed knowledge of habitats, the behaviour of animals and birds, is combined with being an excellent host, organiser, mechanic, good shot, conversationalist, paramedic and mind reader. And above all, remaining enthusiastic and alert all day long.
My daughter, the artist Jessica Hoffman, has drawn magnificent charcoal portraits of the twelve guides profiled, in each case capturing their personalities.
